This certification is a gold standard in the automotive industry, emphasizing quality management, process efficiency, and a commitment to excellence. Attaining it will position EXRO Technologies as a trusted partner in the highly competitive automotive supply chain.
What Is IATF 16949 Certification?
IATF 16949 is an internationally recognized quality management standard tailored for the automotive sector. Developed by the International Automotive Task Force (IATF) in collaboration with ISO, the certification focuses on:
- Risk-based thinking to proactively address potential issues.
- Defect prevention to enhance reliability and safety.
- Continuous improvement across all operations.
- Customer-specific requirements to meet the unique needs of automotive OEMs.
For companies like EXRO, achieving this certification ensures their processes align with the stringent requirements of global automotive manufacturers, paving the way for broader market access and enhanced customer trust.
EXRO’s Journey Toward Certification
EXRO Technologies officially began production at their Calgary facility in September 2023, marking a significant milestone in their operational growth. According to industry guidelines, IATF 16949 certification requires a minimum of 12 months of production activity for organizations to demonstrate the stability and effectiveness of their quality management systems.
This means EXRO should currently be well into their preparation phase, with their timeline aligning to potentially submit for certification in the latter half of 2024.

Coil Driver Production and Certification Scope
One of EXRO’s flagship products, the Coil Driver, exemplifies their innovative contributions to power electronics. It is important to note that the Coil Driver could be built and integrated into an OEM facility that already meets the IATF 16949 standard. For instance, a collaboration or licensing deal with Stellantis or any other automotive OEMs where the Coil Driver is built in their facilities as part of the overall manufacturing process would not be reliant on the certification of the Calgary facility. Only Coil Drivers manufactured separately for passenger vehicles in the Calgary facility would be waiting for this certification.
Coil Drivers designed for non-passenger vehicles, such as industrial or commercial applications, can be produced at the Calgary facility prior to receiving IATF 16949 certification. This approach allows EXRO to continue advancing their product offerings while adhering to industry-specific requirements.
Why Is This Certification Important for EXRO?
Achieving IATF 16949 certification is more than a regulatory milestone—it is a strategic enabler for EXRO. Here’s why it matters:
- Market Competitiveness:
- The certification is often a prerequisite for collaboration with leading automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers.
- Enhanced Product Quality:
- By adhering to the rigorous requirements of IATF 16949, EXRO ensures their products meet the highest standards of safety, reliability, and efficiency.
- Operational Excellence:
- Streamlined processes and risk mitigation practices lead to reduced costs and improved operational efficiency.
- Customer Trust and Loyalty:
- Certification signals to customers that EXRO is committed to delivering consistent, high-quality solutions.
Current Status and Next Steps
As of today, EXRO has not yet announced the achievement of IATF 16949 certification for their Calgary facility. However, the production timeline suggests that they are actively working toward meeting the necessary requirements and undergoing the rigorous evaluation process. Their dedication to quality and continuous improvement positions them as a strong candidate for certification in the near future.
